Jimmy Moore in the Diabetes Summit - "Doctor" Mowll Nods Along As He Gets Free Fatty Acids All Wrong
Here's your link: Jimmy Moore Low Carb Controversy (available until 10am EST Friday 3/27/15)
Paraphrased Highlights & Commentary
Mowll: Jimmy Moore what are your thoughts on eggs
Say what? What does he know Brian?
Jimmy: An egg has 0.7g carb, what's to raise blood sugar? ... Not insulinogenic at all ... Won't raise blood sugar eating it ... it's the toast and margarine that's what's wrong with these studies ... eat eggs in butter and cheese an they won't raise your glucose ... meat gets bad rap too ... how could red meat be linked to diabetes unless you're eating the leanest cuts and getting a gluconogenetic effect ... at the end of the day it comes down to the glycemic impact.
Please shut up Jimmy. Don't look now, but the previously non-diabetic Jimmy Moore has been complaining of pre-diabetic blood glucose readings and issues with regulating his glucose for YEARS now despite his "healthy" diet and a transient loss of ~ 80 lbs in the interim, and the use of metformin-like-acting berberine for a significant time.
Jimmy: Before I shut up about eggs, let me namedrop Chris Masterjohn who said in my book Cholesterol Clarity, that pregnant woman would poison themselves with avidin eating 5% calories in egg whites.
Who knows if this is true, pretty sure if you cook them any concerns re: avidin are nullified, but at least they won't be killed by a sugar spike!
Mowll: Let's talk cholesterol
Jimmy: I have low inflammation ... I say measure CRP, fasting blood sugar and insulin and if these are low who cares what your cholesterol is.
Mowll: Testing for cholesterol is outdated and we realize it's not a very accurate way to test for CV risk
Jimmy: Unless you test for the TOTALLY irrelevant fluffy LDL particles ... doctor will only look at LDL-C ... trigs need to be under 100, optimally under 70 ... Jimmy's is 54.
Mowll: What do you advise if you have some disease?
WHY ARE YOU ASKING HIM!
Jimmy: CT heart scan score ... Jimmy's is zero ... CIMT
Mowll: Controversy of free fatty acids ... elevated FFA seem to cause problems in diabetes ... there's a disconnect between what causes the free fatty acids ... there's an assumption that high FFA are due to a high fat diet and high sat fats ... elevated FFA not from diet
This is ridiculous. Anyone who doesn't know what causes the FFA (or NEFA is my prefered acronym) to be elevated in diabetes and the role of NEFA, or the relationship of NEFA and the various lipoproteins is ignorant and unqualified to discuss diabetes. If this is not discussed in your medical training and certification as a "diabetes educator", any cursory perusal of the peer review diabetes literature should quickly inform you. But do go on and discuss this with someone more ignorant of human physiology than you apparently are! There may be some unknowns as to how exactly these elevated NEFA are involved mechanistically, but this isn't a "controversy"
Jimmy: The Volek Study!!! OMGosh this is the biggest study that's come out in years ... [I can't even ...] that carbohydrate is what's being converted into the free flowing fatty acids in the body
Just shut up. That study, blogged about here, (post contains links to other posts), did not even look at NEFA. It looked at the fatty acid composition of fasting triglycerides and other things, but NOT the fatty acid profile of the free fatty acids. It is just beyond dishonest at this point to claim that de novo lipogenesis is responsible for high triglycerides and CVD risk. Especially palmitoleic acid which is a MUFA where there is considerable evidence that its production (via desaturation) in adipose tissue is associated with and perhaps directly mechanistically related to better glucose homeostasis. But Jimmy is wrong and there's a pre-prepared slide, and Mowll nods along. "Free flowing fatty acids" do NOT come from de novo lipogenesis of carbohydrates.
Jimmy: Fat us used for fuel by the body, and this new thinking scientists are just catching on to ... too bad it will take a while for the message to reach the public.
I can't even. Human metabolism and use of substrates for fuel goes back to the 1800s.
Jimmy: 2014 was a banner year for high fat diets! Teicholz Big Fat (Phony) Surprise ...
At this point the slide shown is below: salmon and veggies. How out of mainstream thinking, eh? How much like a meal for Jimmy Moore!
Jimmy: Existing low fat based on epidemiological studies not RCTs. It's my goal to show people which studies are good and which are not so good.
Again, just shut up. You couldn't even accurately describe what the Volek study looked at, and Mowll is too ignorant to counter your bad "science".
Mowll: What about adrenal fatigue?
Jimmy: It's those paleo bitches bitching about this again, I wish they would shut up. It's like a bad zit that just keeps coming back after you pop it.
OK ... Jimmy didn't really say that part about the female dogs, I'm just having a little fun (and I'm not calling them that word either, lighten up). For those who are unaware, there is an epidemic of adrenal fatigue spreading through the paleo female community, Paleo Parent-mom, Paleo Mom, Paleo Princess Di, and not-so-much-Paleo-anymore Di herself. These women think eating a half of a sweet potato after a work out constitutes a carb load and they are suffering for it. Stress, lack of sleep, and all of a sudden you've got candida and Hashi's and whatnot. It's a real MTHFR!
Jimmy: Those folks are predisposed to being extremely insulin resistant ... myself included ...
Actually, Jimmy had perfectly normal glucose metabolism for several years following his initial weight loss on a normal -- no gobs of butter to up the fat -- Atkins diet along with regular (30-45 min daily) evil cardio. One can only blame his past history with Little Debbie and Coke for his current metabolic failz, it sure can't be his magic carb-free diet!
Jimmy: Diabetics should moderate protein to moderate gluconeogenesis ... chicken breast is like vanilla wafers.
This is absurd. LoBAG Jimmy. Oh yeah, and he didn't say the vanilla wafer thing either, just having fun spoofing off of his absurd nonsense that beef is the new chocolate cake from a couple of years ago now.
Jimmy: I think the cortisol response is due to eating a hypocaloric diet. Look at me! I eat enough calories so I'm not cortisolic.
Oh my. Yes. Look at him. He has clearly regained most if not all of the 80 lbs he lost on his NuttyK, and remains on the same diet if we are to believe him. Much of this has been over the past year, so the HYPERcaloric surplus has been substantial. Then WHY is Jimmy Moore "Wired and Tired"????
According to this quiz by the very same "expert" they are discussing in the interview?
There are 39 questions, Jimmy's score was 38. If we can presume he doesn't have all of these, this means that some of these things are experienced daily or worse, and some of these symptoms are worrying to say the least. Please tell me again about your healthy diet Jimmy?!
Jimmy: The adrenal stuff is scare mongering. If you're not hypocaloric, you're good to go.
I present the above evidence from Jimmy Moore himself. Liar.
Mowll: Why would the body produce excess glucose if it is adapted to ketones ... keto is the only approach that really works in his practice. They're not adapted!
This guy is not a medical doctor. Sad that the law allows chiropractors to open diabetes treatment centers. Now ... mind you that Mowll can SEE Jimmy as he launches into the next part. He calls him a "good friend" in the introduction. No excuses for Doctor-not-MD Mowll.
April 2014 |
Mowll: What about stalls and calories ... I've seen some patients overeat on LCHF. Have a 400 lb patient eating over 4000 cals/day when weight loss stopped. Made changes and he started losing again. Many see LCHF as a license to overeat fat.
Jimmy: You're problem is that you're probably eating a lot of nuts or a lot of cheese. Dr. Eades says these are a problem. So limit nuts and cheese. Atkins only allowed 4 oz a day ... it's not a free for all as you said. Yeah but Sam Feltham ate 3000 calories of nuts a day and didn't gain much weight. It's not the calories ... at the end of the day calories might come into play just a little.
March 2015 |
Jimmy Moore does not need to call a plumber. He needs to get with what the science says about calorie balance and realize that a stick of butter is not a meal. But this is pathetic. He is clearly around 300 pounds. That's not fat shaming or making fun of him dear foamy-mouthed critics. That's a fact. HOW did this happen on his magic diet? Once again? He blames stress. Umm ... see Wired & Tired above. This man is a menace to the health community. If he wants to destroy his own health (and his wife's) apparently nobody is going to be able to talk enough sense into him to stop that. But stop giving this guy a platform to encourage others down this path (... and stop going on his platform).
Jimmy: It's hard for me to get in more than a couple of thousand calories eating this way [keto] because I'm so satiated ... If you get hungry within 4-6 hours of your last meal, you didn't eat enough fat.
Please do explain to everyone why you are not still around the 230 lbs you were after a year on your NuttyK experiment? Just admit it. Calories count and you are eating too many of them. Unless you're lying about your carbs Jimmy, it's not carbs that are fattening for you these days. It's NOT working for you. You're not fooling anyone, though some seem happy to look the other way "for the cause".
Jimmy: LC doesn't mess with your thyroid.OK.

You know, at least most celebrities have the integrity to hide their hypocrisy. These folks are in your face with it, and then act like it doesn't exist when the next book endorsement, affiliate program, business opportunity, etc. happens along.

If I'm ever in need for nutritional advice I know whom I'm going to ask... not...
Mowll: Testing for cholesterol is outdated and we realize it's not a very accurate way to test for CV risk
On his twitter feed Jimmy Moore has been blasting Dr Dayspring as a know nothing, drug company funded statin pusher.
Now Jimmy says that testing for TC, LDL-C, LDL-P, HDL is outdated.
My guess is that he's had recent blood work done and that the results are REALLY, REALLY BAD - SO - he's trying to discredit Dr Dayspring before the results are published.
JIMMY MOORE IS A BIG FAT LIAR!!
BUT - aren't fluffy LDL particles cardio protective???
He's said in the past that he's never adjusted his food intake to conform to his lowered weight.
Bottom line - he's a diabetic with an eating disorder and this BS that the strees of writing two books spiked his cortisol and that caused his weight regain is total BS - IMHO.
What annoys me to no end is that NOBODY who interviews him calls him out on ANYTHING with regard to his weight.
This is exactly it in many cases.
Then, as in religions, there are the deceived and the deceivers.
I've noticed that lately, when you get to the bottom of all of the "weightloss cure" stories on mainstream news websites, they are ultimately selling some kind of smartphone app. This area will simply always be rich pickings for charlatans and opportunists well intentioned or not
Judging by his really disturbing looks I give him maybe 10-15 years if he is lucky. But these kind of morons (literally) grow back faster than they can cease away...
On the other hand, Dayspring's twitter feed is a treasure trove of CVD/CAD info.
Pictures are worth their weight in gold. Who looks better??

High-fat diet alters behavior and produces signs of brain inflammation
"on-obese adult mice were conventionally housed and maintained on a normal diet, but received a transplant of gut microbiota from donor mice that had been fed either a high-fat diet or control diet. The recipient mice were then evaluated for changes in behavior and cognition.
The animals who received the microbiota shaped by a high-fat diet showed multiple disruptions in behavior, including increased anxiety, impaired memory, and repetitive behaviors. Further, they showed many detrimental effects in the body, including increased intestinal permeability and markers of inflammation. Signs of inflammation in the brain were also evident and may have contributed to the behavioral changes."

Besides, even though you've got to hardboil an egg for 4 min to completely deactivate the avidin, you've really got to eat a lot of raw egg whites to create a biotin deficiency. (Jimmy doesn't even elucidate that that's the problem with avidin.)

New Cholesterol Treatment Guideline: A Q&A With Thomas Dayspring, MD, FACP, FNLA, NCMP
Although I have been at this for the past decade, I only now realize thanks to that discussion with my dear friend this week that there are certain things I will no longer feel guilty about anymore. I’m in a far better place where I am in my weight and health now than I was before 2004 at 410 pounds. And continually reminding myself of that fact helps me have the proper perspective on what is true. To that end,
I will no longer…
…worry about my weight and how I look in the eyes of others.
It’s not the business or concern of anyone about what I weigh. I choose to share about it openly with my followers to let you know what’s happening with me, but I’m under no obligation to share. I feel good and live well and that’s all that really matters to me.
…let others make me feel bad for sharing about healthy living.
I have committed the past decade of my life to CONTINUOUSLY sharing quality information at no charge (except for my two bestselling books Cholesterol Clarity and Keto Clarity) to give people solid information they can use to make informed choices about their health. The positive impact my work has made on the lives of people around the world makes the tens of thousands of hours I’ve invested in blogging, podcasting and all my other work totally worth it. Now I am mentoring others to use their talents and GIFTS to help spread the healthy living message even further. We’re changing the world!
…be hurt by judgmental people who have never met me before.
I am one of the most happy-go-lucky guys you would ever meet in person. And yet I’ve seen and heard some of the most vile, ugly, personal attacks against me, how I look, my motivations for doing my work, and worse. It’s fascinating how invested some people have in spreading hatefulness about me and I’m honored to know I give them some semblance of purpose in life. But these faceless attackers haven’t got a clue who I am. So their opinions about me are pretty useless.
…give credence to the haters who really have no life worth living.
Haters gonna hate and when you become prominent online it gets that much more intense. Not everyone who criticizes you is a hater, but when they resort to being ugly towards you it’s time to cut the ties with those kind of people. Disagree with me all you want, but if you make personal attacks against me or my friends then you will be banned, blocked and forbidden from sharing on my platforms. When you’re in my house, you play by my rules or you’re gone.
I Will No Longer…

If This Is How I ‘Eat To Live,’ Then Kill Me Now
Wayne Kaminsky • 5 hours ago
Thanks Jimmy... I am all for eating well and being healthy... I run a company that does just that using only wholefood. Have you tried lower fat eating? Also have you tried intermittent fasting where you only eat for an 8 hour window each day.
LLVLCBlog Mod Wayne Kaminsky • 4 hours ago
That's cute. I fast at least 12-16 hours daily buddy. Lower fat would defeat the purpose of ketosis and make me hungry. No thanks. But appreciate your input.
You can see any of Jimmy's tweets even if you're blocked in two ways, because they are public.
(1) Do a Twitter search for his name. You can see any tweets from there, including clicking on individual tweets. You can also see his individual tweets in retweets.
(2) You can see Jimmy 's public profile by logging out of Twitter or by accessing his profile on a different browser where you are not logged on. E.g., stay logged onto Twitter on Firefox while peeking at the profile on Chrome.
I'm currently slogging my way through "Keto Clarity." I know life is short and there are a myriad of other things I could do with this time, but there is some value in seeing how NK originated and has since evolved. It's a battlefield out there, and though there are casualties, hopefully the way we view food, eating and metabolism will be advanced once the dust settles.
The Jimmy fans on sites like Low Carb Friends are all wondering why they're not losing weight--and they decide they need more fat! Now they're also echoing their hero, claiming that it's all about health, not weight loss--but weight loss was their original goal--and few of them have any labs to indicate that they are healthy because they've also bought Jimmy's claim that ketosis=good health. The man is dangerous, but I also think anyone nutty enough to follow him deserves what they're reaping.
There's no minimum amount of fat you need to eat. Ketosis gets triggered by lack of carbs and protein, not surplus of fat. You raise ketosis by reducing carbs and protein. The reason this sometimes causes weight loss is that ketosis often suppresses appetite. If this happens to you, you'll eat less almost without effort. The less you eat, the faster you'll lose weight.
Of course, if you want your ketogenic diet to contain the same number of calories as your usual diet, you'll have to add fat to make up for the removed carbs and protein.
This is the case for children on ketogenic diets to treat epilepsy. It's important for them to get enough calories to grow, so their diets include enormous amounts of fat.
But you don't want your diet to contain the same number of calories. You want it to have fewer calories so you'll lose weight. The less you eat, the faster you'll lose.
If I am not eating enough fat will weight loss occur?
Whether you lose weight depends mainly on the total amount of calories your body extracts from food. If you eat too many calories you will get fatter even if most of the diet consists of fat. If you eat fewer calories than your body burns you'll lose weight. Ketosis figures into this because it often suppresses appetite, which makes people eat less without effort. Ketosis depends on carbs and protein, not fat.
The fastest way to lose weight is not eat anything. The amount of fat is zero,
but even so you'll lose weight rapidly. You'll also be in high ketosis. Most likely you won't be very hungry even though you're fasting because ketosis usually suppresses appetite.

"I’ve been very open and honest about this and working diligently behind-the-scenes to create strategies that will help control the stress that is raising my cortisol and blood sugar levels making it next to impossible to lose weight right now despite faithfully eating low-carb, high-fat."
"Keep in mind there are so many non-diet reasons why your weight is stuck or going up, including stress-induced cortisol spikes (what I believe I’m dealing with), lack of sleep, hormonal imbalances, getting older, and more."
"I will no longer…
…worry about my weight and how I look in the eyes of others."
SO - let's see - stress induced cortisol spikes, rising blood sugar levels, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalances, etc., etc., BUT these have NOTHING to do with his diet at all!!
Dayspring has balked at his LDL-P for a long time - that's one reason his comments about LDL-P were left out of Jimmy's first book.
So I agree that 1000 LDL-P is probably ideal. But the best way of getting there might be through a plant-strong diet, however hard it is to maintain such a diet. That will drastically lower LDL-P in virtually all who stick to it. The Paleo/LC approach to reducing LDL-P is banking on you to lose weight through appetite control, by gorging yourself with protein and fat. That is an effective way of losing weight but that only works for about 2 out of 3. But you get this sense that it's part of some magic and "metabolic advantage" when all you did is ate less because of satiety and nausea of a fat fest.
Btw, I bet that standing desks will turn out to be useless, else somebody would have discovered by now that people who work in retail stores have lower CVD events.
I've used one for years, indeed I'm standing as I type this. I find it improves my concentration, and it's a great way to increase NEAT. That said, standing while working doesn't replace exercise or offset chowing down an entire bar of butter with a meal.
