MAD about Atkins for Epilepsy!

Image
Hello all!  A short detour in the sporadic blogging as I came across this 2013 paper yesterday:   A decade of the modified Atkins diet (2003–2013): Results, insights, and future directions     Eric H. Kossoff, Mackenzie C. Cervenka, Bobbie J. Henry, Courtney A. Haney, Zahava Turner The acronym in my title has been used to denote the Modified Atkins Diet, and as the title of the paper implies, it has been utilized clinically in the treatment of epilepsy for over a decade now.  The lead author of the paper is Eric Kossoff, and here are some relevant bio points for him: Associate Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Director of the Pediatric Neurology Residency Program.  Coauthor of Treatment of Pediatric Neurologic Disorders and the 5th edition of The Ketogenic Diet  (Amazon affiliate link) . Wrote the foreward to The New Atkins for a New You (2010) written by Eric Westman, Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek....

Swedish Dietary Guidelines

Image
A quick post.  Sweden has released their latest version of their Dietary Guidelines .  I think Andreas Eenfeldt must be busting all manner of guts by now!!  This includes an activity/lifestyle component, but the recommendations are shocking!   There's no paleo, no low carb.  Two screenshots.

Did Chris Kresser Plagiarize Perfect Health Diet for his Healthy Baby Code?

Image
Summary: I present here, the unequivocal evidence that the answer to the question posed in the post title is "Yes".   If I were the author of the book Chris Kresser cribbed from, I'd be hopping mad.  This is a very big deal.    I'm also under no delusions that this will amount to much of anything in the Incestral Health Community (the IHC), because Fonzi is in the air !  (Will Sisson selling reverse cave leveraging plans be far behind?)   But you never know.    Plagiarism in general is serious business.  Heck, I hear colleges are even still willing to expel students over the charge (used to be virtually automatic).   What Chris Kresser did was copy the central tenets of The Perfect Health Diet , and pass them of as his own in The Healthy Baby Code -- a $197 multi-media package.   Of this there can be no doubt ... because he copied erroneous material! {ASIDE:  I don't know if folks reading this truly appre...

Ancestral Health Dishonesty ~ Professor Tim Noakes Style!

Image
It's hard to believe that Tim Noakes actually gave the presentation in the embedded YouTube video over two years ago.   It's even more difficult to believe that anyone has taken him seriously since.   For the topic of this post, one needs only devote ~ 6 minutes to listening to Noakes read to you about human evolution and how Ancel Keys destroyed the world.  This begins at roughly 3 min 36 seconds.   If you can't tolerate the video, or simply wish to follow along with a written form, the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition has dramatically lowered their standards and published Noakes' heavily fortified "transcript" (at least 25 references date to after the 2012 delivery of this speech) without any peer review .  His references, regardless of date, are enlightening, so I'm glad they were provided, however the journal should put a heavy disclaimer directly in/on the paper in question (and fix the oversight that allowed the peer reviewed ...

The BabyGate Files: Pete Evans' Bubba Yum Yum ~ There's a Macro Missing!

A Quick Recap on Chef Pete Evans enlarge to read about the major issues involved Chef Pete Evans teamed up with Charlotte Carr (minor Australian celebrity "mommy blogger" married to another minor Australian celebrity) and some nutritionists an naturopaths to concoct a recipe book of baby foods:   Bubba Yum Yum The Paleo Way: For New Mums, Babies & Toddlers. Zoe Harcombe and Adele Hite's Hyper-System(at)ic Meta-Statistical Bovine Fecalemia

Image
Alternate Title:  Baffling with Bull $#!† This post discusses two "research articles" recently published in peer review journals, and how their use of statistical terminology: imparts undue scientific seriousness to the content of the paper obscures the fact that there is nothing new in the paper to make it even worthy of publication, and allows the authors to assign scientific significance to editorial opinions that are at best not supported by the statistical analysis in question, at worst directly contradicted by it. These two "studies" both boil down to exploiting statistical jargon and methodology to further an agenda.  It's a darned shame the quality of the peer-review process has declined so precipitously in recent times as to allow such obvious examples to get through.

The ACTUAL Dietary Guidelines

Image
Here's a pop-quiz: 1.  When were the first official Dietary Guidelines released to the American public? 2.  When did the Dietary Guidelines first include the specific recommendation to cut overall dietary fat to 30% of total calories, and saturated fat to 10%? GRATUITOUS SPACER IMAGES  As participants and attendees at the #LCHF 2015 "Summit" in Cape Town, South Africa noshed on gourmet fare such as filet mignon and duck confit, the group's sight-seeing trip took them to the paleo side of town where  the "nose-to-tail" stuff is sold out in the open.     "THIS IS NOT THE KIND OF MEAT WE ADVOCATE FOR"     ~ Jimmy Moore

The real diet of William Banting that "cured" his obesity

Image
I just bit the big financial bullet and, upon discovering that it is available in Kindle form, purchased William Banting's Letter on Corpulence on Amazon.com (it's only $2.99, or you can read it online at Eades' site which I found later, it's also available in full text here  - ht C.Grashow).  I do not think there's a low carb diet book and/or author that hasn't at least referred to Banting's weight loss as the quintessential example of low carb in all it's glorious action. "I am now nearly 66 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches in stature, and, in August last (1862), weighed 202 lbs., which I think it right to name, because the article in the Cornhill Magazine presumes that a certain stature and age should bear ordinarily a certain weight, and I am quite of that opinion. I now weigh 167 lbs., showing a diminution of something like 1 lb. per week since August, and having now very nearly attained the happy medium, I have perfect confidence th...
