Let's Do Away With The Dietary Guidelines

Image
Blogstress Note:  This post has been in the draft bin for some time, most of it written very shortly after the JAMA article that sparked it.  As you'll see, it's more ranty than usual ;-)   I thought about toning it down or adding to it from the NYT editorial, but have just gotten too busy.  So I'm publishing it up -- as is -- before it exceeds its best-if-blogged-by date by too much!  There's probably some repetition with the Percentages post published up in the interim.  Please forgive typos, dropped sentences, incomplete thoughts, etc.  Dunno how many there may be, so here goes ... Let's Do Away With The Dietary Guidelines   The true cause of the obesity epidemic! ... if this is what it takes to save me from being bombarded with one more idiotic editorial in a peer review journal -- like the recent one in JAMA by Dariush Mozaffarian MD,DrPH and David S. Ludwig MD,PhD -- I'm jumping on board.  Oh!!  And this rank stupi...

Alternative Medical Ethics?

In observance of the impending imprisonment of "Secrets the Government and Real Doctors Don't Want You to Know" author, late-night infomercial guru and scammer Kevin Trudeau ...  I thought a bump on this post was apropos.   The FTC has been clamping down recently on false claims of miracle cures.  While Trudeau is ultimately being sent up the river more for legal financial issues, I hope this is the beginning of one of those pair of dimes shifts the supplement shills are always talking about.

Carbohydrates and Diabetes ~ Part II

Image
I really struggle sometimes wondering what goes on in the minds of the staunch low carb advocates.  Something comes along that's just their sort of "red meat" revelation -- you know a "what if everything you thought you knew was wrong" sort of bombshell -- and they just seem incapable of wrapping their head around it because it goes against what they've been told by their LC heroes.  Instead of even trying to reconcile the cognitive dissonance, it seems they'd rather just move the goal posts .... just one more time?   I suppose it is easier to believe in fairy tales, to convince yourself that the rebel path you chose on the word of so-called experts is the right one to optimal health and immortality.  The alternative does tend to get rather uncomfortable.   When I wrote Carbohydrates and Diabetes , my intent was to dispel one of the more common remaining myths about carbohydrates.  This is one that, sadly, is embraced by the mainstream as well. ...

JimKKKins: The Saga of Jimmy Moore and David Duke

Image
Random Replay: I had just recently updated this post to put the summary and links but didn't think it was necessary to bump.  As far as I was concerned, this whole sad saga was in the past, and the members of the paleo and low carb communities spoke with their actions, for better or worse.  Newbies will find it pinned on the sidebar as the most popular post here ... not exactly sure what that means in the end.  I still can't for the life of me figure out why people continue to promote this guy, but to each their own.    Just they can't say they didn't know ... and Jimmy can't claim to be wrongfully accused ... and I still think the Paleo community could learn a thing or two from the Paula Deen story ...  But then this past week,  Jimmy Moore is at it again bringing up this issue.  Why I have no idea, because one would think he would rather this faded away into the archives.  But in a really strange turn of events, Joe Salama of The...

Angelo Coppola comments on LLVLC blog

Image
If Jimmy Moore ran an open and honest ship over at his blog, I would leave a respectful (as I always did) comment there in support of the comments Angelo Coppola of Humans Are Not Broken blog (and Latest in Paleo podcast ). I guess since he invoked his name in his  10 Critical Issues The Paleo Community Must Address * Jimmy allowed Coppola to respond in what the astute observer would recognize as a rather critical manner.   In his first response, Angelo corrected Jimmy that his blog has nothing to do with broken metabolisms and such, but then bravely went on to suggest some other things the community really needs to do.  I copy the relevant excerpts here because some of these have been discussed by yours truly numerous times, however flawed the delivery may appear to some in the audience.  I'll bullet point it for ease on the eyes:

The JimKKKins Trio: What did they know, When did they know it, and Does it Matter?

Since no other names have popped up over the past few days, it appears that only three people in the greater low-carb/paleo community were ensnared by the cunning "Dr." David Duke.  I've now listened to all three interviews on Duke's radio program.  Coupled with the stories/explanations each have provided, there are three different sets of circumstances for those trying to decide for themselves what appearances by these individuals on this notorious racist's show mean to them.    In order of their appearances on the show:
