Podcast Appearance Tomorrow: Superhuman Radio

Image
Hello inmates!  I'll be appearing on Superhuman Radio with Carl Lanore tomorrow, August 10, at 12 noon EST. You can listen live HERE You can always listen to rebroadcasts, and I'll post a link once the podcast is "in the can". Our topic will be  A New Perspective on Type 2 Diabetes.   This was inspired by a meme on Carl's Facebook wall and my response that carbohydrates are neither the cause of diabetes or the the direct cause of the associated hyperglycemia.   Basically challenging the notion that diabetes is a disease of carbohydrate intolerance. Should be good!

Latest in Paleo Podcast Appearance

Last Friday (Sept. 16, 2016 for those who may stumble upon this in the future), I had the pleasure of being a guest on  Angelo Coppola's Latest in Paleo podcast .    I had/have a post on the main topic discussed -- the *SMOKING GUN* that the sugar industry funded a study 50 years ago, and *O*M*G* -- in the works, and was not even half done by the time recording came around.  I was also trying to get in the last bit of summer.   This link  will go live when that post is finally published (hopefully later today or tonight):   The Slimey Truth About Sugar Slammers I have not had a chance to listen yet, so hopefully this isn't even necessary.  But, due to my passion on the topic and being mid blogging swirl, I'm sure I was quite animated at times.  It was a new format for Angelo's podcast, and for me as a guest as well.   I may well have talked over the other guest, Meredith Rhodes (a.k.a The Forward Health Coach; Forward Health C...

Recent Podcast Appearance!

Hey all!  Last week I had the pleasure of being a guest on two podcasts.  Will let you know about the second one when it comes out, but for now, I was on the Revolutionary You podcast with Jason Leenaarts.  We chatted about all things carbohydrates and a bit of other stuff.   I met Jason through the fitness peeps I hang out with on Facebook, and actually had a chance to meet him in person at his studio in the Cleveland area a few weeks back.   Just a heads up that the part about medium chain fatty acids was edited together nicely by Jason, but sounds a bit choppy because my headset cut out in the middle of the first response.  So I wasn't sure exactly where it happened, tried to repeat some of it, and got my words mixed up.  When you consume a fat like coconut oil, with a lot of medium chain fatty acids, those dietary fats are preferentially burned as they are not usually incorporated into chylomicrons   (12C lauric is somewhat of a...

Sigma Nutrition Podcast with Danny Lennon

Hi all!  It's been out for a couple of days now, but I thought I'd wait until Friday to blog and share.   I did a podcast interview with Danny Lennon of Sigma Nutrition .   Even if you don't want to listen to me (aww come on, admit it haterz you wanna listen!) this guy has had some great guests and a good variety of them at that, so go check out his interviews! I probably talked a bit more about my personal experiences than I've done in a while, and I was also probably a bit more shrill about some issues.  We recorded this just around a week ago and of late it seems that just about everything I look into coming out of the IHC is either a misrepresentation or a flat out lie.  If it weren't for the rampant eating disorders plaguing the community -- under the guise of health and healing mind you -- I probably wouldn't care nearly as much.    I am also very frustrated by these absolutists laying down laws in their books and such and the...

Two Outside the Asylum Appearances ...

Image
Hello all!  I have two items to announce/alert you to. 1.  I did a webinar for Richard Sennewald who runs a group called The Carbophobe Rehabilitation Group.   I put this one first, as it will only be available free to the public until Wednesday (tomorrow) I believe, so if you're interested, hop on!   Carbsanity 101 ... if that link doesn't work, try this one .   Just some commentary on the experience.  This is the first time I've ever done something like this.  Note to self:  Mount large clock on wall ;-)    I ran quite a bit over the initial time, so it is a bit long.  I didn't practice this out loud due to time constraints and my predictions were obviously a bit off.   It is VERY strange talking into a headset w/o seeing the audience.   I'll probably pre-tape sections of any future webinars I do to keep things going.  Also, I went "off script" here and there, but this was probably a good thing to ke...

Smash the Fat Calorie Debate!

Image
Edited and Updated post recording ;-) Do Calories Count with CarbSane   ( direct video link ) Well, we didn't get to chat as much about calories per se as I'd thought, but it was a nice discussion nonetheless, I believe.   Sam is a good sport even though he knows I've been critical of his calorie experiments and even encouraged folks to come check out these posts:   That 5000 Calorie Jokesperiment and Low Carb Circus Acts , for example.    In some ways I'm frustrated a bit because Sam's schtick is objectively of the calories don't count variety.  Further, his first experiment was specifically about not gaining weight overeating a low carb diet, so there's a bit of evasive maneuvering going on IMO.  However he is not alone in this -- Exhibit A being Jonathan Bailor -- in dialing it back when discussing it with a critic.  So of course calories count, and I'm not sure how well I articulated it (note to self:  don't schedul...

Kill the Guru Podcast

I'm way behind the ball with this announcement, as the airing of the podcast came at a bad time with my current family member situation. I was on  Kill The Guru (Lucky) Episode 13 .   We taped in late August and was "aired" last week.  Hope you enjoy! The entire interview ended up being something like 150 minutes though we had a couple of interruptions.  Still, way too long for a usual podcast so there are some big chunks that were left on the cutting room floor.  As it is the podcast is around 80 min long!  We talked carbs/insulin/Taubes, ancestral diets, low carb rebound, sugar addiction, etc.  I've made a lot of friends in the UK training realm over the past year or so and the carbophobia is quite a bit more extensive there than here in the US (as we discuss). James Kahan has been gracious enough to provide me with the uncut stuff with permission to share at will.  So I will likely do so as "out takes" as time goes by on my Y...

Alan Aragon Research Review ~ Answering some questions about Thermodynamics

Image
I'm once again honored to contribute to this month's edition of Alan Aragon's Research Review.   This time I was interviewed and answered the following questions:   This is premium subscription content, but AARR is always worth the price in my opinion!   Plus you'll get access to all archives (including past contributions from yours truly from the May-June issues of 2013 and 2014). I missed getting to have my dedication in there, as I didn't think of it until after submission, but I wanted to dedicate the article to my grad school advisor Dr. Owen F. Devereux.   Dr. D died a couple years back or I would have been proud to send him my writings on thermodynamics.  He wrote a book called Topics in Metallurgical Thermodynamics that was his main area of research.  I called it the bane of my grad school existence, but really it wasn't.  Through applying the concepts of that book to my research I really learned and understood thermodynamics. ...

Alan Aragon's Research Review ~ The Compelling Case Against Food Addiction

Image
Hey all!  I wrote another article for the current issue of Alan Aragon's Research Review.    The Compelling Case Against "Food Addiction" My article is about food addiction -- focusing heavily on sugar addiction studies that are taken grossly out of context these days!  I present, as the title states, a compelling case against the concept.   I'm quite proud to be the lead article once again, as I was the last time . The AARR is a monthly subscription and whenever you join up you have access to all of the archives.  While aimed at the fitness world, there is always significant content that may interest readers of this blog, so I encourage you to sign on up!

Appearance on Evil Sugar Radio Podcast & Book Update

Image
Hello all! A little while back I recorded a podcast with Antonio Valladares and Scott Kustes of Evil Sugar Radio.  It airs today.  We discuss my book, Restriction Addiction , as well as TWICHOO and Gary Taubes.  We also discuss a bit of paleo craziness.  It was a lot of fun and I hope you'll enjoy! EPISODE 39 Edit:  Apparently over on the website someone left a comment challenging my representation of Stefansson's all meat diet.  From my response: http://owndoc.com/pdf/meat-only-diet2.pdf “During the first 2 days his diet approximated that of the Eskimos, as reported by Krogh and Krogh (3), except that he took only one-third as much carbohydrate. The protein accounted for 45 per cent of his food calories. The intestinal disturbance began on the 3rd day of this diet. During the next 2 days he took much less protein and more fat so that he received about 20 per cent of his calories from protein and 80 per cent from fat. In these tw...

Announcement: Alan Aragon's Research Review Article

Image
I'm proud to announce that I was asked to contribute an article to the April/May 2013 edition of Alan Aragon's Research Review.    Type 2 Diabetes:  Insulin Resistance or Insulin Deficiency? Yes, it's for subscribers only, so if you're not one already, there's no time like the present to sign up!   Alan Aragon's Research Review {BTW, between working on the rather lengthy article and a print interview and suffering some devastating word processor crashes, I've been a bit more sparse than usual answering comments, etc.  Please don't take it personally if I didn't respond, I'm going to try to go back through the past week when I get a chance and check if I missed anything.}
